Where your baby sleeps is essential to any nursery, be it a crib or bassinet. And oftentimes, it’s the first thing your eye is drawn to when you walk into a nursery, making it an easy anchor for the style nursery of your choice. If you are hoping to create an African aesthetic in your litle one’s nursery, here are a few of our favorite bassinets and cribs to orient the room around:
Signature Bilia Bassinet - Kente by Design Dua (black + mother owned business)

A changing table is another staple to any nursery. Below we have a few picks for easy one-piece changing stations to tie in African design, but we’ve also included a few ways to style and decorate your changing area to bring in elements of Africa:
If you’re having a hard time narrowing down the right “vibe” for your nursery, choose a swaddle or bedding that you love, and use it as your guide! Once I find a print that sparks joy -- here are few ways you can use a print to create a theme that you’ll love:
This is an easy one, but choosing a print is a great way to establish the core colors that you’ll be using for your nursery. Everything from simple decorations, to blankets, to wall color can revolve around the colors found in your favorite print.
Once you find a few colors that feel like home for your new little, buy a few cans of non-toxic low VOC spray paint for a few of the colors in your palette. Frames, wall decor, or knick-knacks on a shelf can all be covered with a fresh coat of spray paint to bring them on theme with the rest of your nursery without having to spend up for items that match your palette.
This one may not be for everyone, but if getting a little artsy brings you joy -- consider creating a piece of art inspired by your print! (think painting) Whether i’ts an abstract collab of your colors or your take on an element of the print, having something that you made in your nursery can be a great addition as well as a great keepsake for your little one.
And of course, to help you narrow down the hunt for that perfect swaddle or joy-sparking bedding, here are a few of our favorites:

It's incredible to think that the simple invention of baby-carrying devices had such a profound impact on our development as a species. As outlined by Blaffer-Hrdy (2000), it was no less than 50,000 years ago when this 'technological revolution' allowed mothers to bring food and their precious babies with them simultaneously - leading to an evolutionary division between men's and women’s work responsibilities. This benefitted families in countless ways: better fed moms birthed little ones at shorter intervals resulting in larger populations being able move away from Africa while continuing with same subsistence lifestyle they were used too.
Thousands of years ago, moms and dads used natural materials like bark and leaves to fashion one-shoulder carriers for their children as they moved around in search of food. As we progressed through time, weaving created a new kind of fabric that could be tied closely against the adult or another sibling.
As mankind evolved, so did the creativity of baby carriers. Peoples' ingenuity blossomed into an art form with exquisite designs from all parts of the world! Asia used kimono silk for its intricate beauty, India brought in saaris to pass down their cultural heritage and customs through generations while Mexican mothers held close to what was dear using a sacred rebozo fabric - each one offering something special between mother and child just like African women proudly wrapping up love stories within kitenge or kanga fabrics.
In the late 1960s, a young American woman's time spent as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa was an inspirational journey that led her to invent the Snugli baby carrier. Inspired by witnessing African women carrying their little ones on their backs with ease, this invention revolutionized parental care for future generations of parents and babies alike!
Baby wearing varies from region to region in Africa. But the beautiful Kanga, originating from East Africa, is a traditional wrap with an immense cultural significance. This special garment consists of 1m x 1.5m in size and offers people the versatility to carry or wear it as they wish! Not only that - each piece gets its own unique character through its woven frame (Swahili: pindo) and aphorism at center field( mji). To attach it onto their bodies, individuals tie up both corners together which creates a secure fit around the waistline. A timeless fabric relic - this style of sling has been transporting love within families for centuries
Additionally, In Nigeria, the beautiful Yoruba cloth is used in a special way-as an ancient tradition of baby carrying. Tied around mother's waist with loving care, it cradles the little one close against her back and allows mom to go about her daily activities hands free! The beautifully hand loomed cotton fabric comes plain woven with fringed edges for that final flourish - proving yet again how different cultures have unique ways of showing their deep affection towards children since time immemorial.
Baby wearing provides so many advantages for both babies and their parents. Babies love the closeness to their parent, as well as the warmth and safety a baby carrier provides. It helps keep them contented, making life with a newborn easier for everyone. In addition, baby carriers can make it much simpler for moms and dads to move around while doing chores or running errands without leaving their infant behind. Ultimately, not only does baby wearing offer convenience and practicality - it also brings meaningful connection between parent and child. A maintained physical bond is an invaluable resource that greatly enhances wellbeing and mental health in humans of all ages - even newborns!
Benefits include:
Wearing your baby in a wrap or carrier is an excellent way to keep your baby close and comfortable while you go about your day. It also frees up your hands so you can stay productive and prompt if need be. However, it's important to use a wrap or carrier that was designed specifically for babies to ensure safe use. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions closely when using any type of baby carrying device, paying special attention to the proper weight limit and making sure the material is not damaged in any way. Additionally, keep both you and the child comfortable; make sure that the wrap or carrier fits well with no pressure on either of you, as this may cause discomfort later on. Finally, never forget to practice common sense - if its doesn't feel right, don't do it! With these tips in mind, you can confidently enjoy wearing your baby in a safe and secure wrap or carrier.
Baby wearing can be an amazing bonding experience for both you and your little one as it allows you to keep your new bundle of joy close while still maintaining the freedom of movement for both parties. In order for baby wearing to be enjoyable and comfortable, there are a few considerations you should take into account. Consider selecting a carrier or wrap that is both supportive for the baby and comfortable for yourself. Before each use, make sure to double check that the baby is situated securely before taking them out in public. Additionally, many parents find baby-slinging to be more enjoyable if you ensure that your posture remains upright; this helps not only help protect against muscle strain but ensures that the source of comfort lies in having your child close rather than in being able to move quickly without carrying a bundle. With these tips in mind, you can enjoy wonderful moments with your child without sacrificing either your comfort or theirs - no matter where the day takes you!
Baby wearing has been practiced in Africa and neighboring regions for centuries, being passed down through generations with great ease. It is a beautiful practice that can bring parents and infants closer together, comforting both of them and allowing for easy collaboration and mutual understanding between the two. Although it may seem like a challenging thing to do at first, when done correctly, baby wearing is wonderfully comfortable for both parent and child. By following simple and safe guidelines for baby wearing, such as picking the right type of carrier for your needs, it can be enjoyed by everyone involved. The wonderful array of African-style baby carriers on the market today provides ample opportunity for parents all over the world to experience this profound form of affection, honor its traditions, and share this bond with future generations.

https://www.healthline.com/health/parenting/baby-wearingFinding your own work-life balance sweet spot is a process. You may have to try different things before you find what works best for you, but it's worth the effort. The first step is to think about how much time each week you want to spend working and how much time should be reserved for other activities in your life. It might help if you break down this question into smaller components: Do I want more or less time at home? How much vacation time do I hope for? How many hours per day do I need in order to feel productive at work?
Once you've figured out what kind of balance looks good on paper, take some steps toward making it happen! For example, if taking Friday afternoons off makes sense for both sides of your life--and especially if this helps keep stress levels low--then make sure there are no deadlines looming over those days so that they can stay free from work pressures as long as possible (or forever).
The most important thing to do is to make sure you're taking time for yourself. It's not always easy, but it's essential. Here are some ways you can do this:
Take a bath or shower in the morning before everyone else wakes up. This will help you start the day feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way!
Go for a walk after dinner or on your lunch break if possible (or both). Not only will this give your mind time away from work and kids, but also help keep those endorphins flowing which help combat stress levels too!
Turn off all electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime so that when it's time for lights out there won't be any distractions like emails or social media notifications coming through which could easily keep us awake longer than intended."
The first step to creating a healthy work-life balance is knowing yourself and your needs. As a mom, this can be tricky if you've never had the opportunity to do so before. You may feel like there are too many demands on your time; sometimes it seems like there isn't enough of anything (sleep, money). But knowing what makes you happy will help keep those feelings at bay:
Know yourself--your strengths and weaknesses as well as what makes up a good day for you personally.
Know what kind of life brings happiness: How much time do I want in each area of my life? What activities bring me joy? What do I need physically or emotionally from myself or others in order to maintain balance
Finding the right child care provider is an important part of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. You want to make sure that your child is safe and well cared for, but you also need to find a place that works for your family's schedule and budget. Here are some things to consider:
Location: How close is the daycare? How much time does it take each day? Can I walk or bike there, or am I dependent on driving or public transportation? Are there other parents who live near me who could carpool together? If not, maybe this isn't the best choice for us right now--but maybe we can look into it later when our lives are more settled (and less expensive).
Cost: What does it cost per month? Are there any discounts available if we pay up front instead of monthly installments? Are there ways we can save money through scholarships or tax deductions if we have kids enrolled at this location long term? Can any part of this fee be covered by our employers' benefits package--or even by government programs?
One of the most important things you can do is simply spend time with your kids. Don't let technology get in the way of quality time with them, and don't let technology be a substitute for parenting. It's easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget how important it is to spend face-to-face time with our loved ones--especially when they're young and innocent, before they become teenagers who are too cool to hang out with their parents!
You might be tempted by phone calls or texts while they play outside or watch TV together, but resist this temptation: put down your phone (or turn off notifications) so that you can enjoy being present with them instead.
Making time for exercise and eating healthy food is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. It's not always easy, but it's worth it!
Here are some tips:
Set aside a specific time each day to exercise (for example, after getting the kids ready for school). You might want to start with just five minutes of walking or doing yoga stretches. As you get used to exercising regularly, try adding more time until your workout routine becomes 30 minutes or longer--but only if this feels comfortable! Don't push yourself too hard or too fast; that will just make it harder on yourself later on when life gets busy again.
Try making breakfast something special by adding fresh fruit like strawberries or bananas into your eggs; they're good sources of vitamins A & C as well as potassium. Or make sure lunch includes some leftovers from dinner last night so nothing goes wasted -- saving money while also saving time ;) .
Setting boundaries between work and home life is one of the most important parts of creating a healthy balance. It's easy to get sucked into work mode when you're at home, but setting clear limits will help prevent that from happening.
Setting Boundaries:
Be intentional about when you check email and social media. If it isn't urgent, wait until after dinner or on weekends before checking messages and notifications on your phone or computer--you'll have more time to focus on family if they don't come first!
Turn off notifications for apps like email, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Twitter during the weekdays so they aren't constantly popping up in front of your face while trying to do other things (like eat dinner).
It's important to have fun and laughter in your life. It can be hard to find the time, but it's worth it! Here are some ways you can make sure you're having fun:
Take time to do something you enjoy with friends or family. Go out for dinner or go see a movie together (or both!). Even if it's just once or twice a month, this will help you feel connected with others while also keeping things lighthearted.
Make plans with friends that involve physical activity rather than just sitting around talking all night--this will give everyone more energy and make the evening more enjoyable for everyone involved!
Watch funny videos online together as a family! I love how YouTube has so many clips from funny shows and bloopers; there are also lots of funny short films available on Vimeo. But of course, your kids probably have a few in mind they'd love to share with you ;)
Comparison is the thief of joy. You may find yourself comparing your household to those around you, or even comparing your own motherhood experience with that of other moms. This can be a dangerous trap for all of us, but especially for mothers who are trying to find their own way in this world.
Being different isn't bad; it's just different! You need to understand that there is no right way or wrong way when it comes to raising kids, so if someone else does something differently than what works best for your family (like sending their kids off on a daily bus ride), don't judge them for it -- just accept that it works for them and move forward with confidence in knowing that no matter what decisions we make as parents or how much time we spend doing each task related our children's lives (or not), there will always be someone out there who thinks we're doing something wrong!
When life gets overwhelming, it's easy to forget about the positive things in your life. It's important to take time out and do something for yourself--whether that means going on a walk or simply sitting down with a cup of tea and reading a book.
When you feel overwhelmed by stress or anxiety, try focusing on all the good things that are happening in your life: think about how much progress has been made since becoming a parent, even if it doesn't seem like much at first glance; reflect on how far each of your children has come; think about how proud family members would be if they could see what kind of parent/child relationship exists between each one of them now (and then use this thought as motivation).
Focus on your strengths. Give yourself a pat on the back more often than you give yourself a hard time when things go wrong. It can be easy for moms (and dads) to get caught up in feeling guilty about all of their mistakes as parents or not being able to do everything perfectly all the time--but don't forget: You're doing great!
In fact, you may even be better than great -- you might just be amazing at being a mom ;) (we have a hunch you are!)

]]>The term African Ankara print is widely used as a catch-all phrase for fabric prints that have traditionally been associated with Africa, even though the designs themselves have varied greatly from place to place. Each region has contributed its own unique take on this style of cloth, which has allowed the craftsmanship of many African nations to shine through. To trace the history of African Ankara back to its origins requires a deep understanding of both local fashion design and international trades -- it began somewhere in West Africa some 700 yrs ago, when Dutch traders introduced locally made batik fabrics that were then adapted by various African cultures. Today, African Ankara is worn not only within Western Africa but can be found worldwide as a symbol of both elegance and heritage.
Ade + Ayo Prints that are influenced by this style print:
The African Kente print we see today is believed to have originated in Ghana and was initially used by the Ashanti tribe about 500 hundred years ago. According to oral tradition, Kente silk-woven cloths were only worn by royal members of the court, reflecting great honor and power. While it’s believed that Kente weaving began with one particular artisan, Ananse, stories tell us that there were many others who adopted the practice and perfected their own ways of creating stunningly colorful cloths. This rich history of culture has evolved into a tangible symbol of African pride that is recognizable around the world today.
Ade + Ayo Prints that are influenced by this style print:
The origins of the African bògòlanfini print, also known as ‘mud cloth’, can be traced back to the Mandinka tribe in Mali. This unique textile has been used for centuries to create colorful, intricate patterns for clothing and accessories. The material is made by hand-weaving strips of cotton ankle cloth, then painting it with fermented mud that was collected from local rivers. The fabric must then be stretched, dried and sealed with a solution made of mashed leaves, beeswax and oil. The end result is a colorful work of art that signifies power and strength within the Mande community. While originally created by the Mandinke people, modern day bògòlanfini fabric is beloved throughout Africa due to its longevity and beauty.
Ade + Ayo Prints that are influenced by this style print:
The African Kuba print is a type of textile art with a long and rich history that begins in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formerly known as Zaire. The fabric was woven by members of an ethnic group that spans many regions in and around the DRC, referred to as the Kuba people. It dates back to at least the late 18th century, where the designs were mainly geometric in shape and featured diamond-like shapes. In addition, they included abstracted figures, pictures and other images. Today, these fabrics can be seen on clothing, accessories and home decor items featuring unique symbols that hint at their original use for royal ceremonies and sacred rites. While these prints are popular among many today, it's important to remember how this artwork has been used for centuries in African cultural traditions.
Ade + Ayo Prints that are influenced by this style print:
The African batik print, originating from Egypt and spreading across to neighboring African countries, is a beautiful and multifaceted art form. Often applying wax-resist dyeing techniques, the intricate embroidery on this type of ethnic fabric harks back to ancient Egyptian civilization, particularly with some early examples dating to the late Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 B.C.). During this period, hieroglyphic images were printed onto linen in bright colors derived from plants such as madder, woad and onion skin — this design was used primarily as a royal insignia in ceremony and other dress decorating occasions. Later studies suggest that many of the traditional patterns found in several African countries today are actually direct descendants of Egyptian designs; one example of which is a distinct argyle pattern usually associated with Ghanaian and Beninese cultures, which is thousands of years old! Although it underwent several adaptations during its journey across borders and flourished throughout many generations, the history of African batik prints is truly steeped in olden days' elegance.
Ade + Ayo Prints that are influenced by this style print:
Adire, also known as African resist-dyed cloth, is one of the most ancient and beautiful forms of textile art found in West Africa. The craft dates back centuries, likely originating in Yoruba communities in present day Nigeria before spreading out across the continent. The process involves using indigo and other natural dyes to create designs on fabric. This art was scrupulously preserved by skilled crafters, with images typically representing mythological motifs and spiritual consciousness. In addition to being an aesthetic delight, adire textiles have rich symbolic meanings such as human relationships to nature, the importance of family bonds, or the significance of certain animals within cultures. Today adire is widely popular around the world as a unique way to showcase Africa's vibrant culture and traditions through fashion.

]]>For moms, the beginning of each new year comes the “aftermath” of Holiday break, new additions to your home (toys and other gifts alike!), and trying to find the balance in it all. To start, take a deep breath! You’ve got this, and we’re here to help. January is a month that is full of new beginnings, but it can be hard to get started on the right foot when you’re still catching your breath. We’ve gone ahead and put together a monthly activity guide for things you can do with your littles during the month of January, from anywhere.
This might not seem like the most fun way to get our list started, but let us prove you wrong! It’s great to get littles on board (if they’re old enough) with getting your home into order after the holidays. Aside from setting a good example (monkey see, monkey do, right?) here are our favorite tips for how to make cleaning and organizing fun for kids:
Encourage your kids to adopt a lifestyle of goal forecasting and attuning to their desires with a 2023 vision board. Have them sit down and write out all of their dreams, goals, and aspirations for the future and what they want to see happen by then. For younger kids who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, you can provide them with visual aids such as a stack of magazines and pictures, or even a collage of images that represent their goals and dreams to help them get started.
Once they have created a list of ideas for their board, it’s time to create the actual physical vision board. Depending on the age and skill level of your child, you may want to provide them with pre-made templates or help them design their own layout. You can also assist them in cutting out pictures, writing inspiring words and quotes, and gluing the elements onto a poster board.
Once your child’s vision board is complete, be sure to hang it up in a prominent place such as their bedroom wall or even the fridge where they can look at it every day and be reminded of their goals. Encourage them to take time each week or month to review their vision board and reflect on their progress. Remind them that reaching these goals may take hard work and dedication, but with a positive attitude and perseverance anything is possible! Finally, provide words of affirmation and support whenever you can. Helping your child reach their goals and look towards a bright future is an incredibly rewarding experience.
If you’re having trouble gathering inspiration to help get started, start by asking your kids these simple questions:
As we settle into some of the coldest months of winter, this is a great time to not only talk about what happens to our earth during the cold winter months, and there’s no better way to do this than with crafts! Here are a few of our favorites with themes of winter and what happens during this time of year.
Animal Hibernation
Animals hibernate to survive difficult periods in the year, such as winter. It helps them to conserve energy and escape extreme temperatures or lack of food that inhibits their ability to thrive. In fact, some animals go through a process called torpor where their body slows down its metabolic processes. This allows them to use minimal resources and remain still in a state of rest for extended periods of time. Hibernation is nature’s way of helping animals survive throughout the season when their surroundings become less favorable for living their everyday lives.

Types of Snow/Snowflakes
Snow is a magical thing, and it comes in many different types. From powdery flurries to deep icy crystals, you can find an amazing variety of frozen precipitation all across the world. We have snow that is dry like this powdery stuff, heavy, wet snow that blankets everything it touches with pure white beauty, and even graupel: a mix between hail and snow. No matter the type of snow you come across, there's no doubt that it leaves its mark on our natural winter landscapes.

Plants & Dormancy
While it may seem like plants just go to sleep during the winter, there’s actually quite a lot going on under the surface. As temperatures cool and day lengths shorten, many plants begin to go into dormancy mode, which means they slow down their processes and conserve energy in preparation for the next growing season. During this time, some plant species might lose their leaves or turn brown as they draw carbohydrates out of leaves and into branch and root tissue before the cold sets in. Other plants may become hardy and will stay green throughout winter while they gain protection from freezing temperatures. It’s important to remember though that all plants can be vulnerable to frost so if you have plants growing outdoors, make sure to provide adequate cover before Jack Frost arrives!

Have fun exploring and learning about winter together!
Finally, while we may be shivering during the winter months here in the states, this time of year is a perfect time to help teach littles just how big our world is! This could look like:
And in case it’s helpful, here are a few facts to help you round out your “winter around the world” knowledge…
In South America, winter usually means mild temperatures with little rainfall. Although it doesn't get as cold as North America or Europe, the days can be chilly enough to require extra layers.
In Africa and Australia, winter is the dry season with temperatures ranging from mild to hot. The winter months are an excellent time for outdoor activities such as camping and wildlife viewing.
In Asia, winter varies depending on location. In some parts of China and Japan it can get very cold with a lot of snow. On the other hand, countries like Thailand and Cambodia experience milder temperatures with less rain.
No matter where you are in the world, winter is a special time of year. Whether it's warm or cold, there is something magical about experiencing the season in its own unique way.
As you look ahead to the new year and all that you hope to achieve, don’t forget to include your kids in your plans. In America, we share traditions with much of the world on Christmas like attending church, gathering for a nice meal, or exchanging gifts -- and these traditions can also be seen throughout much of Africa. But, there are many beautiful Christmas traditions that are unique to their country of origin, and we'd love to share them with you! Here are a few African Christmas traditions that you might not know about, yet. ;)
In 1966, a new celebration was birthed here in America by Black Activists Maulana Karenga and his wife Tiamoya to celebrate and embrace the traditions of African culture. Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated by many African Americans and people of the African diaspora. It comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means ‘first fruits of the harvest’ -- taking inspiration from the start of the harvest season in Africa, when the first crops are gathered. The celebration runs from December 26 until January 1, each year. During Kwanzaa, families and friends come together to celebrate African culture and heritage. They may light the Kinara (pictured below), the seven candles of Kwanzaa, to represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa: Unity (Umoja), Self-Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba) and Faith (Imani). People also enjoy music, special feasts, and exchange of gifts. By celebrating Kwanzaa, people can honor their African heritage and build strong communities within the African diaspora.
Kwanzaa is a holiday of joy and celebration, but also a time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. Family members often share stories of African heritage and culture, emphasizing their role in continuing the legacy of their ancestors. In this way, Kwanzaa is a perfect opportunity for families to come together, build relationships, and create lasting memories.
Kwanza honors the celebrations of Africa during the holidays, so let's take a look at just a few of them.
In Ghana, Christmas Eve is a particularly special night. Ghanaians have a big feast to honor it, with a special food called Fufu, as well as a soup of some kind. Fufu is typically made from ground cassava or yams slowly pounded in a mortar; not only does this create an incredibly delicious dish but it's also seen as a symbol of family bonding and the coming together of community. And certain soups like palm nut soup or groundnut soup—made with peanuts or tree-nuts—make the dinner even more festive, adding warmth and nutrition to the big event. Celebrating Christmas in Ghana is no small endeavor; it's an opportunity to bring out the best in family and friends, while feasting on delectable flavors unique to this part of the world.
Christmas is a special time for families to be together and express how much they care about each other. For Ethiopian families, this sacred tradition of giving meaningful gifts is celebrated on January 7th, or on the Ge'ez Ethiopian calendar, the 29th day of Tahsas! On this day, Ethiopians not only exchange presents but also spread love and joy within their respective families. As an integral part of the festive celebrations, it is a beautiful way to show appreciation for the ones who mean the most. Ethiopia's unique cultural expression of Christmas truly expresses the heartwarming sentiments that characterize this magical holiday season.
Every year when Christmas rolls around, Mozambique often celebrates with a unique and delicious dish called matapa. It's made with staples local to the area: shrimp, peanuts, and coconut milk. Matapa has become a tradition in Mozambique that really brings family and friends together to celebrate the holiday. Not only is it incredibly tasty, but its preparation emphasizes the importance of having unity while connecting people through food. While this special dish is meant to be shared among loved ones during the festive season, it's definitely worth trying out any time you want to enjoy some heartwarming cuisine!
Many current Christmas traditions in Namibia come from Germany as it was a German colony between 1884 and 1915. On St Nicholas' Day (December 6th), many children in Namibia hope for a visit from the man himself and towns and cities often light up with decorations. But not just any decorations - festive lights of snowmen and candles embellished by mighty African elephants make this holiday extra special! And when it comes time to decorate the Christmas tree, some families purchase branches or pines shipped all the way from South Africa; but many opt for local thorn trees instead. Namibians also celebrate this magical night around an exquisite meal, often served with traditional ‘German style’ gingerbreads or marzipan cookies made especially for the occasion.
South Africa has always been blessed with incredibly warm weather around the Christmas season, and it means that locals are able to get outside and really enjoy the day. That's just what happens every Christmas in South Africa; families come together outside, sometimes as early as dawn, to enjoy a delicious breakfast in the company of loved ones. This is followed by more fireside conversations and plenty of fun activities throughout the morning hours, from cricket games to surfing sessions. There's never a lack of things to do when you're enjoying the outdoors on Christmas day in South Africa! It really is the most wonderful time of year.
The celebrations around Christmas in Africa are something special! Everywhere you look, people are out singing and dancing, demonstrating the joyous spirit of this holiday. It's wonderful to experience the local culture that is intertwined with many of the festivities, as it brings a truly unique flavor to the world-wide celebration of Christmas. No matter where you find yourself in Africa during this time of year, you're sure to encounter delicious food, warm hospitality and fond memories that will last a lifetime.
So whether you're in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, or anywhere else in the world, make sure to take some time out of your busy schedule to enjoy this special holiday with the people you love most. Merry Christmas!
]]>Mindfulness is a way of being aware and present in one's life. It involves paying attention to the moment-to-moment experiences without judgment, something we know all moms need (and kids too!) Practicing mindfulness with young children can help them develop concentration, regulate emotions, and build resilience.
Introducing mindfulness practice into your daily life with your children can be a fun and meaningful experience for the entire family. You might start by taking a few moments to engage in mindful listening with your child – simply give them your full attention as they share their ideas and experiences. Going for nature walks and exploring the sounds, sights, and textures of the environment can also be a great way of connecting with the world around us. Alternatively, you could use objects from everyday life such as play dough or other sensory items to explore their qualities together. Yoga poses or movements that involve stretching or joint compression encourage physical awareness while also promoting relaxation. Additionally, working on breathing exercises like blowing bubbles or observing sensations in the body can help you both move through transitions more easily. Practicing mindfulness is entirely personal and can be done in the simplest of ways. Here are 6 ways that we found helpful as fellow busy moms!
Mindful listening exercises are a great way to engage young children in mindful practices. You can start by playing a game where you turn off all electronic devices and ask your child to listen carefully for any sounds coming from the environment. Ask your little one to close their eyes and take notice of what they can hear around them. This exercise will help your child become more aware of their own thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations as well as their surroundings.
Getting out into nature is an excellent way for children to practice mindfulness. Going on nature walks encourages kids to pay attention to the details of their environment—the colors, smells, textures, shapes, etc.—which can help them be more mindful of themselves and the world around them. Nature walks also provide opportunities for you to talk about emotions with your child and give them space to process those feelings through conversation or just being in nature together.
Setting up an exploration box—a container filled with various objects such as shells, rocks, leaves, feathers, or other items found in nature—can be a fun way for kids to explore their senses while practicing mindfulness. Invite your child to touch each object carefully and pay attention to how it feels against their skin or how it looks when they hold it up against the light or turn it over in their hands. By engaging with these objects through touch and other senses such as sight or smell, kids learn how to focus on the present moment rather than worrying about the past or future.
Movement exercises like yoga poses can help children practice mindfulness because they involve focusing on physical postures while taking deep breaths throughout each pose. These activities also help kids understand that there is no right or wrong way of doing something; rather it's about being in tune with your body while focusing on breathing deeply throughout each pose which helps foster a sense of calmness within oneself.
Deep breathing exercises are another great way for kids to practice mindfulness since they involve focusing on one’s breath. This practice helps bring awareness into the present moment instead of ruminating on past events or worrying about future scenarios. Some simple breathing techniques include counting breaths (inhale 1-2-3-4; exhale 4-3-2-1), imagining each inhale bringing fresh air into the body followed by each exhale releasing stale air outwards from the body; or visualizing that each inhale brings warmth/calmness/peace into oneself followed by each exhale releasing any worries/anxiety/stress outwards from oneself.
Mindfulness is an incredible skill that helps us to deeply connect with ourselves, our lives and the world around us. It's especially useful in times of stress and overwhelm, as it facilitates a more centered and peaceful mindset. Perfectly summarized, mindfulness is about bringing your awareness and attention to the present moment without judgment. Best of all, it’s something that everyone can do anywhere, anytime. Whether you're peeling potatoes or at your desk at work - mindfulness techniques can be integrated into the mundane moments of everyday life to help cultivate a greater appreciation and enjoyment of the here and now. And all that being said, your kids notice -- and will be inspired to find mindfulness for themselves if they're seeing it modeled consistently.
Practicing mindfulness helps us stay in tune with ourselves and our internal processes. It can help us observe the sensations that occur in various parts of our body and then consciously link them with the thoughts and emotions that arise at that moment. This connection becomes even more pronounced when we cultivate an attitude of non-judgment as we explore these interrelated experiences. As we become more present and aware of our feelings, it can grant us a greater understanding of how we respond to different people and situations, allowing us to modify our reactions or approach things differently in order to benefit both ourselves and those around us. All of which is necessary for the wildly unpredictable, yet entirely beautiful journey called motherhood.
We hope you found these tips helpful, and would love to hear more of the ways that you practice mindfulness with your own littles in the comments! And as always, be sure to follow on Instagram + Join Our Email List to save 15% off your first order from us here at Ade + Ayo!

Ade + Ayo was created to make beautiful African design more accessible to children. We hope to spark curiosity, love and respect for the people and cultures that inspire our products. From our perspective, it’s not cultural appropriation for children and families who are not African or of African descent to wear our products. Cultural appropriation is a valid concern and there are two key factors I consider:
First, I (Temidayo, Owner and Founder) am Nigerian and I work with other African artisans and designers, which means Ade + Ayo pieces are created from African cultural perspectives. So, when you purchase from Ade + Ayo, African creatives directly benefit. Second, when you receive your Ade + Ayo pieces, it’s important that your family interacts with these items from a place of celebration and respect for the cultures and people from whom they originate. So, you certainly don’t have to be of African descent to bring Ade + Ayo into your home. In fact, we love to see everyone wearing and interacting with our products! I’m so grateful for your support.
Cultural appropriation occurs when a person from one culture adopts elements of another culture without understanding the meaning or history behind them. This can often happen when people from majority cultures appropriated disparate traditions from minority cultures. For example, someone might wear a Native American headdress to a Halloween party without realizing that this item is sacred to many Indigenous peoples. Or they might use a Chinese symbol as a tattoo without knowing that it carries negative connotations. Such appropriation can be hurtful and disrespectful, and it can perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Additionally, it can lead to cultural misappropriation, which is when people from one culture adopt elements of another culture and claim it as their own. For example, a white musician might appropriate music from an African American artist and claim it as their own work, as this has unfortunately happened time and time again throughout history.
You might know the feeling: you see someone wearing something from another culture and you love it, but you're not sure if it's appropriative. Is it cultural appropriation if you wear a sari to your friend's wedding? What about if you get a henna tattoo on vacation? The answer is, it depends. To determine whether an action or item is appropriative, you must first consider the intent behind it. If the person is wearing the item or participating in the action as a way to honor and celebrate the culture, then it is probably not appropriative. However, if the person is doing so for fashion or entertainment purposes, then it might be appropriative. Additionally, we must consider the power dynamic between the cultures involved. If the person wearing the item or participating in the action comes from a position of privilege in relation to the other culture, then it is more likely to be appropriative. Ultimately, the best way to avoid cultural appropriation is to educate yourself about other cultures and to be respectful of their traditions.
Cultural appropriation is the act of taking elements of a culture that is not your own and using them for your own purposes. Often, this is done without any understanding or respect for the culture from which they originate. For many people, cultural appropriation is a huge problem because it can lead to the devaluation and mistreatment of other cultures.
Some common examples of cultural appropriation include wearing traditional Native American clothing without any knowledge of the history or meaning behind it, using African spiritual practices without respect for their religious significance, or using Japanese symbols and images without understanding their cultural context. In each of these cases, the appropriator is taking something from a culture that they do not understand and using it in a way that is often harmful to members of that culture.
Cultural appropriation can be a difficult issue to navigate because it is often unintentional. However, it is important to be aware of the potential impact of our actions on others. If we want to show respect for other cultures, we must take the time to learn about them and avoid appropriating their traditions in a way that undermines their importance.
While cultural appropriation can sometimes be well-intentioned, it often leads to negative consequences. For instance, people who appropriate other cultures often do so without any understanding or respect for the tradition they are borrowing from. This can lead to the misuse or misrepresentation of important cultural symbols and practices. In addition, cultural appropriation often results in the erasure of distinct cultural identities. When people appropriate elements of another culture without permission, they are effectively taking that culture away from its rightful owners. This can leave people feeling disconnected from their own heritage and roots.
Ultimately, cultural appropriation is harmful because it perpetuates racism and prejudice. By appropriating another culture, people are effectively saying that that culture is not good enough on its own – that it needs to be “improved” or “fixed” by borrowing from elsewhere. This attitude reinforces harmful stereotypes and discriminatory attitudes towards members of that culture. So next time you’re tempted to try out someone else’s culture, ask yourself if you’re doing so out of respect or ignorance. Chances are, if you’re not sure, it’s probably the latter.
If you’re still reading, we’re confident that the last thing you’d ever want is to contribute to the devaluation of cultural traditions and the erasure of cultural identities. So how can we avoid perpetuating cultural appropriation in our own lives and the lives of others? One way is to be aware of your own cultural biases and privileges. Another way is to learn about and respect the cultures of others. When in doubt, ask instead of assume. And always be willing to listen when someone from a different culture speaks up about their experiences with appropriation. By making these simple changes, we can help create a more culturally inclusive world for everyone.
Cultural appropriation is a serious issue that should be avoided whenever possible. By educating ourselves on what it is and why it’s harmful, we can work to stop appropriating other cultures in our own lives and the lives of others. We provide detailed descriptions for each of our African designs, and we hope that you'll take the time to read about them and celebrate their meaning with us!

Cloth bibs are a registry staple that baby’s just can’t do without, and our 3-pack of African Print cloth bibs makes for the perfect gift. Not only are cloth bibs extremely practical and can save mom from a full on outfit change, these three bibs and their prints each have a unique and meaningful story to tell.
First we have the Akpere print, which is the upper left in the image. Our Akpere print is inspired by ankara, a pattern and fabric style common in various parts of Africa. Ankara is seen in celebration wear, everyday wear, accessories, furniture and, more recently, fashion runways across the world. This style of fabric is known for its bright, vibrant colors and unique repeat patterns. The patterns have different cultural meanings, conveying messages to those who are gifted the fabric or see someone wearing it at an event. I’ve always loved the way I feel when wearing ankara - joyful, beautiful and connected to a greater community. Kids should feel these things too, so our ankara-inspired prints bring a traditional fabric style to comfortable kids’ clothing. I've named this print Akpere which means "basket" in Yoruba, a language spoken in Nigeria, because the diamond design reminds me of a woven basket.
Next is our Ajoyo print; the blue-colored bib. This print is inspired by adire - an indigo-dyed cloth made in southwestern Nigeria by Yoruba women. When I traveled to Nigeria as a teen, I was particularly drawn to the adire fabrics I saw hanging in local markets. The striking designs drew me in, and I was even more amazed when I learned about the traditional dye process undergone to create these beautiful fabrics. The Ajoyo collection pays homage to the traditional fabric, capturing the varying shades of indigo that emerge through the dyeing process and bringing the beauty of adire to play-ready clothing. We've named this print Ajoyo, which means "celebration" in Yoruba.
And lastly, we have our Ufie print. (red) Our Ufie print is a batik-inspired design. The batik style of textile production is an ancient technique, with traces of it seen in the wrappings of Egyptian mummies. It is a wax-resistant dyeing technique. Designs are printed or drawn onto cotton using melted wax; then the fabric is dyed and the parts of the fabric that were covered by wax resist the dye. When the wax is removed, the original background color of the fabric emerges. West African-style batik fabrics are cherished in the region. The designs feature images and geometric shapes that hold special cultural significance, each telling a unique story. My mom helped me name this print "Ufie." She is from the Kwale people of Nigeria and the bright red of this print reminded her of the red powder called ufie - this is a powder that is turned into a paste and rubbed into women's hands and feet to prepare them for their wedding, or to pamper them during the early stages of pregnancy.
The three bibs come in a ready-set bundle for easy gifting, but you can of course check out our entire collection of cloth bibs if you’d like to mix and match your own. (and learn more about the meaning behind our prints!)
A Black-Owned bookshop that has a great selection of books for babies, toddlers, and beyond, Brave + Kind Bookshop is the perfect place to grab a book for a soon-to-arrive baby. At Brave + Kind, you can find a huge selection of books available through their online shop, many of them with themes of diversity, inclusion, kindness, and more.
A book is not only a great way to encourage bonding between parent and child, but it's also a fun way to introduce babies and young kids to the world of reading. Research has shown that reading to babies and young children can help them develop language skills, improve their ability to focus, and even increase their IQ. In addition, reading together is a great way to create special bonding moments between parent and child. So if you're looking for a unique and special baby shower present, consider giving a book.
Here are a few of our favorites for a baby shower (other than the four pictured above which we also love!) :
Pro Tip: Use the book as a card for the parents and new baby by writing a thoughtful note inside the book. It’s a practical way to reduce waste and share a meaningful note that will be treasured every time they pick up the book.
We hope one of these three amazing businesses offers not only an amazing gift for the next baby shower, but maybe even something to bring to your or home or family. And of course, if you know of any black or mama owned businesses that create something wonderful to take to a baby shower, please leave them in the comments! We are so grateful for this community and the every growing list of black entrepreneurs in the baby space.

For centuries, humans have known and used milk to benefit the skin (even Queen Cleopatra is said to have used milk bath as a beauty regimen!). And today, there is much scientific evidence to support the idea that milk can indeed benefit our skin. Breast milk, in particular, contains a number of antibodies and nutrients (they really don't call it "liquid gold" for nothing) that can help to soothe and heal the skin. For this reason, many parents are now choosing to give their babies milk baths. Whether it's to relieve dry skin, eczema, or diaper rash, milk baths are not only 100% natural but are also a very effective remedy. Not to mention they can also provide much-needed hydration for delicate newborn skin.
If you're looking for a way to soothe or simply nourish your baby's skin, a breast milk bath may be just what you need. In this article, we will discuss what milk baths are, the benefits they offer, how often you should give them to your baby, and how to prepare them.
A milk bath is simply bathwater that has been mixed with breast milk. This can be done by adding the milk directly to the water, or by using a cloth soaked in milk and placing it over the tub. Either way, your baby will benefit from the added nutrients and antibodies present in breast milk.
It really doesn't need to be fancy, if you have breast milk, and a small tub where you bathe your babe, you have everything you need for a beautiful milk bath.
Breast milk is packed with nutrients that are essential for your baby’s development. These include proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. In addition, breast milk also contains antibodies that can help protect your baby from infection. As for it's other known benefits to the skin, here are a few reasons why you might try this magical elixir in the tub with your baby, as breast milk has been found to be helpful for:
Another great benefit of milk baths is that they can help soothe and relax your baby. Mothers have sworn by placing their baby in a warm milk bath as a way to relieve any discomfort their baby may be feeling (from gassiness to congestion!)
If you have enough milk (and it's something you're open to) milk baths are also a great way to bond with your little one. Spending time together in the tub can be a special and cherished experience for both of you.
There's really no one correct answer here. (much like most of parenthood!) You can give your baby a milk bath as often as you like. Some parents like to do it once a week, while others do it more or less frequently. It’s really up to you and what works best for you and your family. If you're using milk baths as a way to treat a skin condition, be sure to check in with your pediatrician for advice and insight.
If you are using fresh breast milk, you can simply add it to the bathwater as you need it. If you are using frozen milk, you will need to thaw it first. This can be done in a bowl of warm water, or a milk warmer if you already have one. Just try to avoid using your microwave as this can create hot areas in the milk as well as rid the milk of some of its nourishing components. Having said that, if you have breast milk that's been sitting in the fridge or freezer too long, a great way to keep it from going to waste is to use it in a milk bath. (as long as it still smells good it's fine to use in the tub)
Preparing a milk bath is also incredibly simple. Start by filling your baby’s bath with lukewarm water as usual. Then add 150–300 mL of breast milk (just enough to make the tub cloudy or milky). Let your baby soak in the tub for anywhere from 5 to about 15 minutes while you splash around and gently rub the milky water on those precious little limbs! Pat dry using a soft towel, massaging their skin gently until it all absorbs. Follow with your favorite nourishing baby lotion (plain and simple coconut oil works like a dream if you're looking for a one-ingredient fix) and that's it!
Milk baths are a time-honored tradition with many benefits for both baby and mom. If you’re looking for an easy, affordable way to improve your baby’s skin health, milk baths are the perfect solution. Not only do they hydrate and soften delicate skin, but milk baths have been shown to help reduce eczema, cradle cap, and other skin conditions. By following the simple steps outlined, you can start giving your little one milk baths that will leave them feeling soft, smooth, and healthy! Have you ever given your baby a milk bath? When it comes to interior design, one of the easiest ways to bring an African influence into your home is by including artwork and other designs from African owned brands or African artisans. If you live near the city, these pieces can often be found at local street markets or art galleries, but online is where we know to be the most easily accessible. If you haven't already, be sure to check out our recent post on African-Inspired Home Decor Ideas. We've detailed 20+ beautiful products with images of how to style them, along with the brands and shops where you can purchase them from online (all Black-Owned). These pieces add flavor, dimension, and history to any room in your home.
As far as cooking goes, African cuisine is some of the most flavorful and healthy in the world. Try incorporating some African spices into your dishes, such as ginger, cumin, and paprika. We have a few blogs that are full of delicious recipes to try. Check out these Cozy African Recipes to Try this Fall or these Four African Dishes to Try this Thanksgiving.
Toys are another great way to teach children about African culture. There are many companies that create beautiful and unique toys inspired by African traditions. These companies use locally-sourced materials and employ African artisans, so you can feel good about supporting them. Some of our favorites include African Dolls Lolo, which are handmade by women weavers in South Africa, and Swahili Modern, who sells handmade toys and nursery decor, created by working with hundreds of artisan partners spanning 15 African nations: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
When it comes to teaching children about their African heritage and culture, there are few things as important as giving them access to learn the basics of African languages. Learning languages has been shown to promote healthy development and cognitive benefits that last a lifetime, not just in children but also for adults! As a parent or caregiver -- you can still get involved with education around world cultures by teaching kids how much more there truly is out there beyond their own culture's boundaries (and vocabulary).
We proudly offer KOLI & ULUM "My First Words" books and flashcards here at Ade + Ayo alongside our collection of products to help more families discover African Languages with their kids.
KOLI & OLUM is dedicated to introducing African languages to children at an early age. Their “My First Words” series contains engaging colors and vibrant images of everyday items that young children will recognize.
You can check out our Favorite Resources for Teaching African Languages to Your Kids in our recent blog post here.
Finally, what better way to show your children African pride than by dressing them in beautiful play-ready African aesthetic clothing? For those children born to Africans or people in the African diaspora, our well-crafted items bring connection to heritage, imbuing daily play and exploration with culture. For all children, we believe that Ade + Ayo can encourage a connection to our global community. An obligatory inclusion on our list -- Oprah Winfrey is one of the most well-known Black female entrepreneurs.
She is best known for her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ran for 25 seasons from 1986 to 2011. During that time, she became the first Black woman to be Forbes magazine's richest American entertainer. As of 2020, she has a net worth of $2.6 billion. Oprah is also an accomplished actress, producer, and philanthropist. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2010. In addition to her many accomplishments, Oprah is also an inspiration to Black women everywhere who aspire to be successful in their own lives.
Sheila Johnson is a co-founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and the first African American woman to become a billionaire.
Growing up in inner-city Baltimore, she overcame a lot of obstacles to become the successful businesswoman she is today. Something we touched on in a recent Instagram post was if it is cultural appropriation for non-black persons to decorate or wear products with African designs if they are not of African descent. We believe that there is a way for non-black folks to enjoy these designs – but it’s important to stop and ask the following questions: Is the company you’re purchasing from mimicking or using designs from another culture without acknowledgement? Without working with designers/artists from that culture? Are you learning about the culture behind the designs you love, interacting with the items with respect and celebrating the people and cultures these designs come from?
Rest assured, all products and brands we showcase and recommend are Black-owned and celebrate authentic African culture. But we encourage you to read about the designs and artists when making any purchases to get a more full understanding of the designs.

It’s worth noting that the most sustainable option is almost always to use what you already have. But, nothing lasts forever – and many of the items on our list are ones that need to be replaced from time to time! However, if you wish to make any swaps for things in your home that still have some life in them, be sure to find a reputable donation center near you. For clothes and other textiles, unfortunately, it’s estimated that over 80% of textiles (even the ones that are donated) will end up at the landfill, or in an incinerator. To ensure this doesn’t happen, consider recycling sheets, clothes, and more at a Textile Recycling Center near you. Since options for textile recycling vary based on where you live, the best thing to do is to google “Textile Recycling Near Me” for the best available solutions.
Swap this: Synthetic sheets
For this: Organic cotton sheets. You'll sleep better knowing that your sheets are free of harmful chemicals, plus organic cotton is soft and luxurious. Win-win!
Our Favorite Picks:
Swap this: Your conventional mattress (generally speaking, it’s recommended to replace your mattress every 6-8 years)
For this: A biodegradable/eco-friendly alternative mattress. Recently studies have shown that mattresses made from organic cotton, natural latex, Tencel, and organic wool may help alleviate environmental impact. And with thousands of five-star reviews, it’s safe to say these mattresses don’t compromise on comfortability.
Our Favorite Picks:
Swap this: Your plastic toothbrush
For this: A bamboo toothbrush. Plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills where they take centuries to decompose. Bamboo toothbrushes, on the other hand, are made from a renewable resource and can be composted when you're finished with them. Plus, they're just as effective as a regular toothbrush!
Our Favorite Picks:
Swap this: Shampoo and conditioner that comes in a plastic bottle
For this: Shampoo and conditioner bars. Ditch the bulky plasic bottles in your shower. Anything that comes package free is worth a second look, and there are some great options available for both shampoo and conditioner bars. The favorites we’ve listed below are also recommended for natural hair, but can be used for all hair types.
Our Favorite Picks:
Swap this: Synthetic candles and room fresheners
For this: A toxic-free candle in a recyclable container. There are hundreds of candles on the market now that are free of phthalates, and synthetic and artificial fragrances. As for room fresheners, opt for an essential oil diffuser and organic essential oils if possible.
Our Favorite Picks:
Swap this: Standard foam sponge
For this: Biodegradable cleaning sponge. This swap is a no brainer. Traditional kitchen sponges not only harbor as much bacteria as a toilet seat, they also can be wasteful and need frequent replacing. With a biodegradable option, you’ll replace less often, and can rest assured that when it is time to replace your sponge, it can easily and safely return to the earth.
Our Favorite Picks:
Swap this: Plastic Ziplock Bags
For this: Reusabe Storage bags. Whether you need gallon sized bags to use in the freezer, or cute snack bags to go in your kid’s lunches – there’s a reusable swap! Not only do we love the cute designs and prints on the reusable options, but they’ll also end up saving you money in the not-so-long long haul.
Our Favorite Picks:
Going green has never been easier! With these simple swaps, you can easily make your home more eco-friendly without breaking the bank or overhauling your entire lifestyle overnight. The leaves are changing color, the weather is getting cooler, and fall is in the air! This is one of our favorite times of year. Not only because of the beautiful fall foliage, but also because there are so many fun things to do with your kids. In this blog post, we will share our favorite easy ways to celebrate fall with your little ones. From simple crafts to delicious recipes, we have you covered!
So grab your pumpkin spice latte and let’s get started!
One of our favorite fall activities is making homemade applesauce. It’s so easy to do and the kids love helping out. Plus, it tastes delicious! Simply wash and chop up some apples (we like to use a mix of different kinds), add a little water and sugar, and let them cook down in a pot on the stove. Once they’re nice and soft, mash them up with a potato masher or an immersion blender. That’s it! You can enjoy your homemade applesauce as is or use it in one of our fall recipes below.
Another fun fall activity is making pumpkin seeds. This is a great way to use up those pumpkins you carved for Halloween! Simply scoop out the seeds, rinse them off, and spread them on a baking sheet. Then drizzle with olive oil and your favorite seasonings (we like salt, pepper, and garlic powder) and bake at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes. Yum!
Other fall recipes we love:
If you’re looking for a fall craft to do with your kids, try making these easy-leaf suncatchers. All you need is some tissue paper, construction paper, clear contact paper, scissors, and glue. Cut out different shapes of leaves from the tissue paper (you can even use fall-themed cookie cutters if you have them), and then glue them to the paper. Once your suncatchers are dry, hang them in a sunny spot and enjoy the fall colors!
Other fall crafts we love:
Lastly, welcoming fall wouldn't be complete without getting outside! Go on a nature walk and see how many different types of leaves you can find. Or head to the pumpkin patch and pick out your favorite pumpkins. And don't forget to jump in a huge pile of leaves!
Both Instagram and TikTok are both great search engine tools to find outdoor Fall Activities in your area! You're likely to find a few ideas that you might not find with a generic Google Search, as well as see some videos/pictures to get an idea of if the experience is a good fit for your family. On TikTok, try searching "fall activities (your state or city)" -- you might be surprised at how many great results pop up!
What are some of your favorite fall activities? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

Along with the many environmental benefits of composting (naturally enriches our soil, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, reduces methane emissions from landfills, lowers your carbon footprint, etc..) -- this eco-friendly practice creates free nutrient dense soil to use in your garden and potted plants.
It’s not as complicated as you might think. All you’ll need to get started is a pail or Tupperware container in the kitchen to collect scraps and a composting bin. (or a spot in the yard for a pile) Bonus: there are many super easy, kid friendly, videos available to help you get started!
But what if I don’t have a garden or anywhere to use my beautiful composted soil? Ideally, the backyard is the best and easiest place to compost - set up a container, learn the basics, and you're set. However, if you don’t have a yard or don’t want to deal with tending to a compost pile, there are places all over that love nothing more than to receive your waste. You can find a full list of where to compost, by state, here!
Another way to be eco-friendly is to use natural cleaning products. While there may be recipes for DIY cleaning products that you can easily make at home (if you haven’t learned about the magic of vinegar for your household cleaning, it’s a must!), there’s also an entire marketplace of eco-friendly options available on sites like,
Not only are these much better for the environment, but they also typically come in concentrated formulas that last longer, so you can save money while saving the planet.
As we briefly touched on when it comes to cleaning products, Amazon Aware is another great way to integrate eco-friendly options into your home, with the convenience of Amazon! You can view hundreds of products that are both Climate Pledge Friendly certified and verified carbon neutral. Products that are listed in the Amazon Aware storefront are all made of organic, natural ingredients, so this is a great place to start for beauty products, household cleaners, clothes, bed sheets, and more.
One of the most powerful thing a parent can do is to begin instilling Earth-loving habits and concepts in their little ones at a young age. After all, children are our future! This doesn’t have to be a big event, but can be little things you teach them everyday. Teaching eco-friendly practices can look like everything from having them watch FernGully to explaining to them about where food comes from while you’re walking through the grocery store or preparing their lunch. Here are a few of our favorite ways we incorporate teachings into our day-to day.
Incorporating eco-friendly practices in your home, and teaching our littles to do the same, is one of the most important gifts we can give our children. These are our favorite practical ways for busy moms to be eco-friendly, but do you have any tips to add? Please share in the comments below!

Many African proverbs are strongly tied to nature, earth, and animals, conveying lessons of life often through often simple daily occurrences, all of which young children are familiar with. In this blog post, we will be sharing six of our favorite Nigerian proverbs to share with your kids, and a little bit more about their meaning.
The power of this proverb is that it can inspire you to desire success, and no matter what your situation may be right now -- it will eventually turn into something good. It highlights the versatility of our obstacles; they can be used to make us or break us. But, much like the sun, there is no way to avoid these hardships altogether. Everyone has their own strength which helps them reach various heights despite any obstacles present on the road towards fulfillment!
This proverb reminds us that there is always a "why" behind someones behavior. We can not simply look at the result, we must look deeper to see the full picture. Likening the image of smoke and fire going hand and hand (never one without the other) also helps little ones begin to learn about cause and effect, both of their actions and the actions of those around them. If someone isn't being kind, it's important to look past the unkindness, not take it personally, and acknowledge that others have their own issues to deal with -- just as we do!
This one is all about what you believe. If your integrity speaks volumes, then good things will come to fruition just by being yourself! As the proverb suggests, presenting yourself as a person of integrity and honesty will attract the attention of the things your want most, and they will come to you in their season. This proverb also subtly reminds us that good things will come when they are ready, just as the fruit will drop when it is ripe and when it notices “an honest person.”
A reminder of the importance of balance, as well as give and take. When we are drawn to something, we must reflect on what it is that puts that very thing into motion. More than likely, the thing that we want can be achieved with hard work, which is the equivalent to the bow that remains with you. You always have it within your power to remain focused and aim for what you hap to achieve, your passion (the arrow) will then carry you to the goal, whatever that may be.
This is one of the more silly proverbs and may seem disheartening at first glance, but the message is an important one. Rather than exhausting ourselves over what we see in others and strive to become that, we should focus on who we are and what we truly have to offer. No matter how much the lizard wants to be like the alligator, it will never be as muscular. But, the inverse is that the lizard has access to places and spaces that the alligator does not, simply because of his size! Both are equally important, just as our talents and skills are.
Think of the image of the ostrich with its head in the ground. Just because we choose to turn a blind eye to what is going on around us, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. This proverb reminds us not only to stay curious and always seek more wisdom and understanding but to do so with courage. If we wish to not know about something, it’s likely due to fear or discomfort associated with whatever that thing may be. While littles are quite curious and don’t typically need to be encouraged to be even more curious, it is worthwhile to teach them that there is much they do not know – and to always press into the unknown with confidence and courage.
Nigerian proverbs are a great way to impart wisdom to our children. These five proverbs all have themes of honesty, integrity, and authenticity. We should encourage our kids to live their lives by these values. And what better way to start than teaching them from an early age? Meet Imagine Worldwide: an organization that provides education and opportunity for young children in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, “sub-Saharan Africa has the world’s highest out-of-school rate for primary school age children. In 2014, nearly one in four children of primary school age were out of school.” Imagine Worldwide is working to bridge this education gap by providing access to quality education for young children in sub-Saharan Africa.
Their mission is simply this: to empower children around the globe to build the literacy and numeracy skills needed to achieve their full potential. This is done by providing children with state-of-the-art software and technology that provides research-based curriculums that not only allow them to learn at their own pace but also allow them to learn in their own space. The software and technology provided to children by Imagine Worldwide can be used without internet access or grid power, so it is easily accessible no matter the circumstances.
Imagine Worldwide makes their solutions for children scalable by keeping things accessible, high quality, and most importantly -- affordable. The annual cost of their learning solutions is less than $10/day per child and declining. This includes software, accessories, power, shipping and receiving costs, and all fees associated with implementation and support from Imagine.
“In 2016, blended learning advocate Joe Wolf wondered: “Has technology evolved to the point where we can teach children to read and do math on their own without a formal teacher or school? Could that innovation allow us to leapfrog school infrastructure and serve the millions of kids that do not have access to high quality education?” Joe and Susan Colby imagined what would be possible for children if that were true. The possibilities were limitless – and from that expansive vision, Imagine Worldwide was born.”

On last weeks blog, we broke down a few ways to shop more sustainably on Amazon, one of them being switching to AmazonSmile for your Amazon shopping. With AmazonSmile, you still have access to the entirety of Amazon's storefront, but the key difference is that a portion of the money spent goes to a non-profit organization of your choice. It really is as simple as logging into your Amazon account through smile.amazon.com, choosing the charity of your choice, and shopping as usual. Both Imagine Worldwide and Ubongo are available to select as the charity of your choice.
We are proud to donate a portion of all sales on Ade + Ayo collections directly to these organizations. We stand by keeping "kind" at the center of what we do here, and will continue to contribute to organization like these, and hopefully others in the future!
Thank you for reading, and we hope this has inspired you to find your own way of giving back!

But what if I told you there’s a way to incorporate your values for sustainability into your Amazon shopping experience? It is indeed possible, you just need to know where to get started. In this blog post, we’ll be detailing 5 easy ways you can shop more sustainably on Amazon – and still enjoy the benefits of convenience. And the best part is, these easy ways are really as easy as changing the link you click in to Amazon with.
As we mentioned above, more often than not, making the switch to shopping more sustainably on Amazon is as easy as pluging an extended URL into your browser, like the one above. But what does it mean (exactly) to shop Cimlate Pledge Friendly? Amazon has partnered with trusted third-party certifications like Fair Trade Certified, Global Organic Textile Standard, OEKO-TEX, MADE SAFE, and more (check out the full list here) to ensure the list of products that have Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly badge are indeed sustainable choices. Additionally, Amazon has created two of their very own certificates: Compact by Design and Pre-Owned Certified to ensure products meet their own standards for sustainability when it comes to a products shippability and condition (if pre-owned).
If you see the little green Climate Pledge Friendly underneath a products name while you shop, you can rest assured that it meets a certain set of requirements, and you can also view which certifications it has been given.
Learn more about Compact by Design
Learn more about Pre-Owned Certified
Another easy option for buying products that would be considered more “green” on Amazon is to shop via the Amazon Aware storefront. By using the link above, you can view hundreds of products that are both Climate Pledge Friendly certified and verified carbon neutral. Products that are listed in the Amazon Aware storefront are all made of organic, natural ingredients, so this is a great place to start for beauty products, household cleaners, clothes, bed sheets, and more.
Learn more about Amazon Aware
This may be the easiest way of all to shop more sustainably on Amazon. With AmazonSmile, you have access to the entirety of Amazon’s storefront, but the key difference is that a portion of the money spent goes to a non-profit organization of your choice. There are over one million local and national charitable organizations to choose from, so sending money to a charity that supports sustainability has likely never been easier. To utilize AmazonSmile you’ll simply head to smile.amazon.com, sign in, choose the charity of your choice, and shop and buy as usual! The storefront is exactly the same, the only thing that changes is that a portion of your money goes to a cause you believe in. Not only is this the easiest way to do good on Amazon, it also might be our favorite because of the level of intentionality you can put into the charity you choose! Below are a few of our favorites that you can choose through Amazon. The first two are also organizations which Ade + Ayo gives back to as a part of our business ethics. (to support any of these organizations through Amazon Smile, simply type it’s name into the Charity search bar)
Charities that Support Sustainability
A best practice for sustainability is to buy re-used or pre-owned whenever possible. By preserving and pro-longing the lifespan of products that already exist, we help reduce our carbon footprint. Amazon Renewed is a simple way to help you do just that! This is more specific to pre-owned electronics, but with “e-waste” contributing to 70% of overall toxic waste, it’s important to make sure more electronics don’t end up in our landfills. Each Amazon Renewed certified product meets an extensive and rigorous set of requirements to ensure the fact that it is reused does not take away from your user experience. But, if you’re really worried about getting a faulty product, Amazon Renewed certified electronics come with a 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee.
Bonus: if you have previously owned electronics that you no longer need, you can trade them in to Amazon for Amazon gift cards and/or promotional discounts. To do this, simply visit amazon.com/tradein, select the category that fits your item, read the requirements, and send it in! It’s that easy. Don’t think its usable? Amazon accepts small consumer electronics for recycling for free! This can also be done through Amazon Trade In.
Hoping to buy second hand products that outside of electronics? Look no further than the Amazon Warehouse store! You can find almost anything you need (baby supplies, organizational must-haves, home decor, and more!) within Amazon Warehouse. To keep things legit (and safe), Amazon inspects all items for quality assurance. And just as with Amazon Renewed, if for any reason you are dissatisfied with your products, you’re covered by a 30-day return policy. The only catch here is that, as you may have expected, the inventory here is constantly shifting, as new pre-owned or open boxed items are returned and sold. So, if you see something you’ve been looking for, order quickly!

While we don't want to create even more "to-do's" for you -- trust us when we say creating a routine is the most essential piece to holding all the craziness together. This will help you stay on top of homework, activities, and your own needs. However, it's totally okay to be incredibly flexible with that routine as you are sorting out what works and what doesn't. Are there any key factors that help your morning run smoothly? (ex: a cup of coffee first thing before the kids are up, waking a specific child first, packing lunches the night before) -- whatever it may be, build off of what works and leave the rest! You'll find the routine that feels best for you and your family.
Another practical tip that centers around routines and is will make your life a heck of a lot easier (hopefully!) -- start bedtime routines earlier than you think you need to. (pro tip: start this the week before school starts so kids have a bit of time to adjust prior to that first day/week of school) Starting bed time routines a bit earlier than usually for the first week or two will create the essential buffer needed to wind every one down before bed. With new routines, increased stimulation, and homework -- getting to bed on time can get a little chaotic. Start the bedtime routines early to ensure every gets to bed on time, and there's lots of room for any unexpected (but quite expected) delays. ;)
As things are in transition, it might require a bit more intentionality with your kiddos to make sure their emotional needs are being met. One of our most favorite ways to do this is by re-working the classic "how was school?!" when you pick your children up. Try something like, "who made you smile today?", "Which friends did you sit by at lunch?", or "what did you create today at school?" Chances are, you'll get a better insight into how their day really went, as well as creating a space for them to be seen and heard.
Keeping with being intentional with your littles during this season of transition, another important thing you can do is share about what you do while they are at school and times that you were reminded of them/thought of them. (they'll likely be more interested in the latter) There are moments throughout our day that we are inevitably reminded of our kids, why not share those little moments? For little kids, this could be something like "I saw a fire truck today and it reminded me of you! I hope we see one together soon!" or "Today I was at the grocery store and thought to get you your favorite snack!" This way, they feel seen when you are gone and also know that they are on your mind.
Another back to school tip that's often overlooked is self-care. As moms, we are so used to putting our needs last -- but this season (and really every season) it's important to remember to take care of yourself. (you can always check out this list we curated for Mother's Day of our favorite at home beauty treatments from Black-Owned Businesses!) Whether it's taking a few minutes each day for some "me time" or scheduling a regular girls' night out, make sure to find time for activities that make you happy. This back to school season, don't forget to take care of yourself!

Baby sign language can be a fun way to communicate with your little one long before they are able to speak. It also has some amazing benefits that you may not have known about! In this blog post, we will break down everything you need to know about baby sign language. We will discuss when to start, how to teach it, and the best resources available to make it a breeze. Plus, we will share 5 easy signs that you can use today!
Baby sign language can be extremely beneficial for both baby and parents. It is said by experts to:
All in all, baby sign language is a wonderful tool that can benefit both babies and parents.
So, when should you start teaching your baby sign language? In short: it's never too early! Many start as early as five or six months. However, it is important to keep in mind that baby sign language is a gradual process. Some experts suggest sticking with 4 or 5 signs, in the beginning, only showing/teaching small "batches" of signs at a time. (we'll share 5 simple ones you can get started with today below!) Other experts in their field suggest, as parents, learning as many signs as you can (specifically in regard to everyday events and items), and using them frequently and paired with language and visual aids.
When you decide what signs you want to start incorporating, there are two main methods for teaching your baby: the natural approach and the formal approach. The natural approach is when you simply incorporate baby sign language into your everyday life. For example, whenever you are making a certain gesture, say the word out loud at the same time. Over time, your baby will start to associate the word with the gesture and will eventually start using the sign on their own. The formal approach is when you set aside specific times to sit down and teach your baby sign language. This could be during diaper changes, feedings, or bedtime routines. Sometimes setting aside time to work on baby signs together can be a nice way to break up your schedule and spend some intentional time with your baby, but it certainly isn't necessary to make baby signs work for your household.
Being a parent in today's technologically oriented society can certainly have its downsides, but for exploring parenting options, resources, and more... it is really so nice to have google right at your fingertips. While a google search of hundreds of resources on how to get started with baby sign language may only be a click away, we've gone ahead and sifted through the resources to bring some of our favorites right here for you.

We’ve taken 12 gorgeous African prints and fashioned them into stylish headbands to dress up your sweet baby. (or, to give as a gift! They make for great baby shower presents) Pictured is our Umhlaba print, inspired by ankara, a pattern and fabric style common in various parts of Africa. We’ve named this particular print Umhlaba, the Zulu word for land, earth or soil.
Made of super soft and lightweight 100% Organic Cotton and available in sizes 0-12M and 1-5T
This adorable accessory is the perfect finishing touch to any outfit -- meet our Baby Turban Hat! Available in 6 different prints, but here we have our Kayin Print. This unique print is inspired by adire - an indigo-dyed cloth made in southwestern Nigeria by Yoruba women. When I traveled to Nigeria as a teen, I was particularly drawn to the adire fabrics I saw hanging in local markets. The striking designs drew me in, and I was even more amazed when I learned about the traditional dye process undergone to create these beautiful fabrics. The memories of seeing adire in the markets were with me as I worked with print designer Shadé Akanbi to design our Ade + Ayo take on adire. The Kayin collection pays homage to the traditional fabric, capturing the varying shades of indigo that emerge through the dyeing process and bringing the beauty of adire to play-ready clothing. We've named this print Kayin because it means "celebrated child" in Yoruba.
Our turbans are also made of super soft and lightweight 100% organic cotton and are available in one size that fits newborn to 6 months.
We love seeing sweet newborn babies come home in their precious Ade + Ayo Top Knot Hats. These tiny knit caps are carefully crafted to keep your little one comfortable without compromising style. This 6 Piece Hat Set is the perfect gift for a friend or your own soon-to-arrive babe. Each print (Adehye, Berbere Bogo, Kayin, Sapeur, and Takula) boasts bright summer-inspired colors to spark joy and happiness. Easily tie the knot to adjust the height of the hat, making for the perfect fit. Roll the bottom of the hat up or down to adjust the fit or the look! Pairs perfectly with our other styles including the bodysuit, sleeveless romper and jumpsuit.
Every mom knows that cloth bibs are an absolute must-have for any baby, so why give them some African joy? Our African Print Cloth Bibs will keep your baby’s neck and chin dry while bringing a pop of color to their outfit! Soft and absorbent, our bibs pair function and style to help your baby stay comfy, keeping the delicate skin around baby’s mouth and nose safe from irritation. Pictured is our Tukula print, a playful interpretation of kuba cloth - a textile traditionally handwoven by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kuba cloth is woven using the strands from raffia palm leaves that are then dyed using natural dyes. This fabric originated in the 17th century and is characterized by bold patterns that suggest movement. Of the 17 ways that a design can be repetitively varied on a surface, the Kuba people have exploited twelve in their cloths! Amazing. Historically, the Kuba people have used these cloths as wrappers, skirts, sleeping mats and even currency. We've named this print "Tukula,” the Bakuba word for the red pigment obtained from the heartwood of indigenous trees and traditionally applied to art and cloth created by the Kuba people.
Our last included accessory might be considered a bit more of a mealtime staple, but if you make it this cute – it most certainly counts as an accessory. Our African Inspired Silicone Bibs come in 8 beautiful and unique styles and prints to keep mealtime playful and fun. Pictured is our Gangan Silicone Bib – a design inspired by various African drums, including the talking drum known in the Nigerian language Yoruba as "gángan." Talking drums are part of a family of hourglass shaped pressure drums that have special importance among the Yoruba people. Because the pitch of talking drums can be changed to mimic the tone of human speech, they were once used as a means of communicating over long distances. Even today, talking drums are used to celebrate births, tell stories and mark someone's passing.
Made from food-grade silicone, these comfortable and easy-to-clean bibs are anti-bacterial, BPA free and phthalate-free. They feature a wide, stay-open front pocket that keeps your child's cute outfit free from messy accidents.
Any of these 5 accessories are the perfect way to top off your little one’s look, and keep them stylish all season long. Our African print accessories are sure to make a statement and turn heads wherever you go, and are full of intentionality and tradition. We hope you love our collection as much as we do! ]]>As we prepare to celebrate Juneteenth, we are so grateful for the many ways we can honor this important day and spend intentional time with our families. In the blog post, we’re sharing 8 Juneteenth celebrations you and your family can participate in from anywhere. At home, with friends, or out in your community – we invite you to join us in commemorating Juneteenth in an intentional and meaningful way.
The complexity of generational trauma is something that still affects many African Americans greatly. While there is no simple way to untangle the anguish of trauma, participating in self-care, rest, and relaxation are all ways to embrace freedom and stand in opposition to the effects of oppression. On Juneteenth, it is especially important to carve out time for yourself and for joy. Invite your family to join you in taking a moment to think of what would bring a sense of pleasure or joy to your day, and then go after it boldly.
Displaying the text, June 19, 1865, red, white, and blue colors, and a bursting star in the center – the Juneteenth flag is full of symbolism. Created by activist Ben Haith, founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation, this banner is likely to be seen flying over state capitals and city buildings on Juneteenth. If you have little kids, we’ve linked a few Juneteenth flag crafts below, as well as educational YouTube videos to check out.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture has created an extensive online guide on how to support young children’s understanding and celebration of Juneteenth. This multi-page resource was compiled by NMAAHC’s early children’s education team and is a truly exceptional free resource. It includes tips on age-appropriate ways to talk to your kids about slavery and freedom, activities to inspire hope and activism, helpful books, as well as a list of other helpful online resources. As mentioned, this is a free resource you can access using the link below,

By shopping at Black-owned businesses, we can help to close the wealth gap and create opportunities for black entrepreneurs. We’ve curated several blogs about some of our favorite Black-owned businesses that we encourage you to check out, and the below websites are all excellent tools for finding Black-owned businesses in your area or online.
A popular way to celebrate Juneteenth is to host or attend a BBQ with symbolic food and drinks. A particular tradition that is often associated with Juneteenth is the drinking of red drinks. This practice can be traced back to the early days of Juneteenth celebrations when punch was a popular beverage choice – it was typically made with red fruits and berries, which helped to give it its distinctive color. Over time, this tradition has evolved and red drinks have come to represent the blood that was shed in the fight for freedom.

There are hundreds of gatherings, both online and locally, that are free to attend and are organized to celebrate Juneteenth. You can use a tool like Eventbrite to find a gathering near you or to attend virtually. They have hundreds of options from online learning experiences to commemorative concerts and festivals to celebrations for kids.
There are dozens of African American History Museums all across America, many of which are hosting their own events to celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth. You can find your state on this list to see if there is an African American History Museum near you.

Gathering in the name of freedom, enjoyment, and community is a simple way to commemorate Juneteenth, and we love the idea of doing so at your local park. Celebrating outdoors and in nature is particularly special, and has been an important part of African American culture. Local parks are places where people of all backgrounds and ages can come and enjoy communal space, displaying the beauty as well as the importance of diversity and inclusivity.
Join us in one – or three – or in all of the above ways that you and your family can commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth. And remember to take a moment to do something that brings you joy, for no other reason than for enjoyment’s sake. Honor those that have given their lives for freedom, for those who did not live to see it, and for those who continue the work that is so necessary to ensure a future where equality, inclusivity, and diversity are abundant. If you have a special way that you will be celebrating or commemorating Juneteenth this year, let us know in the comments. We love hearing your unique ideas and stories. And happy Juneteenth to you and your family.

cover photo: Club Crafted]]>As a new mom, I felt like I was given an opinion for every baby product under the sun. The best strollers, car seats, and breast pumps... the cutest onesies, teethers, and swaddles…
What I don’t feel like I really knew until I was in the thick of motherhood was how important it was to have products that make my life easier. Products that last. Products that I can feel at ease with knowing they align with my values. Those are the products that I wish I had been filled in on!
I’ve learned that re-usable products are some of the most important products I’ve got in my mom tool belt. I’m talking about products that save money, time, and are environmentally friendly. Once I started using reusables I realized they aren’t just for the eco-devoted parents, many of them are essentials for all of us! Here are few reusable items that every mom needs this for the summer (and all year round!)
I am now shocked to look back and realize that no one mentioned this essential product before I entered motherhood - the wet bag. These life-saving bags are basically bags with a waterproof lining and a zipper closure that can hold anything. Pro tip: stock up on 4 or 5 so they can be designated for different places. One or two in the diaper bag or the car for dirty changes of clothing, swimming lessons, or to hold toys, another in the gym bag for sweaty clothes or with breast pump gear to hold wet pieces, and another around the house for beach or pool outings. You name it - this bag is an essential that you didn’t even know you needed. Say goodbye to plastic bags and hello to your new lifesaver. We love this LHK wet bag which includes to snappable straps for easy hanging (stroller, car, bathroom, you name it)
We hate thinking about the countless plastic bags that have ended up in a landfill somewhere -- and that’s why we love reusable snack bags. These day trip staples offer convenience, a solution to the plastic problem, and just plain cuteness. We also love using them to organize purses, diaper bags, toiletries or electronics when traveling and so much more. We recommend having at least 6 reusable bags in rotation - just throw them in your wash with your laundry and hang dry. Our favorites? The Bumkins reusable snack bags because they are easy to clean and mesh feel makes them a perfect fit for just about anywhere. We also love silicone Stasher bags because they’re transparent, a bit more heavy duty, and perfect for keeps snacks crisp and fresh! (especially refrigerated ones!)
We love these Bumkins Snack Bags that come in so many fun prints!
We love reusable kids water bottles because they save us money, keep plastic out of landfills (since they largely don’t get recycled), and quench our thirst when we’re on the go -- but the real game changer is how much they save us time. These reusables cut down on the seemingly never ending dish washing. We love this stainless steel kids water bottle as an option for it’s leak proof lid, insulated double walls, protective bumper (for when it’s dropped), and lifetime warranty. (yes, even these kid sized ones!)
We all know that straws are a wasteful item and that they’re piling up in the ocean, but at the same time they can help prevent spills and ice hitting you in the face when you’re trying to enjoy a refreshing drink (we’ve been there). Reusable straws are an easy fix and a staple in eco-friendly homes. Keep stainless steel straws on hand in the kitchen, and try silicone reusable straws (complete with a carrying case) in the diaper bag or in the car. This way you can enjoy drinks, prevent messes, save money, and the environment all at the same time.

If you have decided that breastfeeding is for you, you will need nursing pads in your life. They are worn inside your bra to keep it dry and keep milk away from your clothing so you don’t have fun wet spots on your shirt. Although there are disposable nursing pads -- we came to love reusables for so many reasons. Mainly, they are healthier for mom! They allow for better air circulation which is helpful with sore nipples and are free of absorbant chemicals that would otherwise be against your skin. Plus, They also will save you money! The cost of a box of 60 disposables is around $10 while our nursing pads are $9.95 for 2 pairs and they come with a little waterproof zipper bag for on-the-go storage.
What reusable products did we miss? Let us know in the comments!

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Jubilee Day. Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, the day Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. The Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863, but it didn't reach all parts of the country until after the Union prevailed. For many freed blacks living in Texas, Juneteenth became an important annual tradition. Juneteenth continued to be celebrated primarily by African Americans throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. In recent decades, however, Juneteenth has become more widely known and celebrated by people of all races and ethnicities. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 45 states across the country.
When talking to your kids about Juneteenth, it's important to be honest and open. Explain that Juneteenth is a day to remember and celebrate the end of slavery in America. You can also share some of the traditions associated with the holiday, such as eating watermelon or attending parades and festivals. It's also a good idea to stress the importance of respect and tolerance when discussing this sensitive topic. Help your child understand that everyone should be treated equally, regardless of skin color or ethnicity.
There are a few theories about why watermelon is so closely associated with Juneteenth. One theory is that watermelons were plentiful and relatively cheap during the summer months, making them an accessible and affordable treat for newly freed slaves. Another theory is that watermelon is a symbol of hope and liberation, as the fruit was often smuggled into slaves' quarters as a way to share messages of freedom. Whatever the reason, eating watermelon on Juneteenth has become a cherished tradition for many African American families, and it serves as a great (and tasty) visual. We love the idea of sitting down with your kids to talk about Juneteenth was a fresh and juicy watermelon snack to help kids put tastes and visuals to what they are learning.
You might be thinking “how can I share the complexities and devastation of slavery to my young child?” Take a deep breath. These issues are heavy. There are lots of great books that help parents and children expand their understanding of this dark chapter in American history. We love children’s books because not only do they thoughtfully break down complex topics, but they offer beautiful visuals to go with. Here are a few books we’d recommend, many of which are available at one of our favorite black-owned bookstores, Brave + Kind.
In addition to talking to your kids about Juneteenth, you can also teach them about some of the other holidays that celebrate African American culture and history. Kwanzaa is a seven-day festival that honors African heritage, while Martin Luther King Day celebrates the life and legacy of one of America's most important civil rights leaders. By teaching your kids about these holidays, you can help them develop a greater understanding and appreciation for African American culture.
Juneteenth is an important day in American history, and it's a great opportunity to talk to your kids about the importance of freedom and equality. It's also a chance for them to learn more about the African-American experience in America. Let your kids know that juneteenth isn't just a celebration, it's a reminder that we still have work to do when it comes to achieving true equality for all people. And most importantly, let them know that Juneteenth is a time to come together and celebrate our shared heritage and culture. How will you be celebrating Juneteenth this year?
