About the Print:

Our Tukula print is a playful interpretation of kuba cloth - a textile traditionally handwoven by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kuba cloth is woven using the strands from raffia palm leaves that are then dyed using natural dyes. This fabric originated in the 17th century and is characterized by bold patterns that suggest movement. Of the 17 ways that a design can be repetitively varied on a surface, the Kuba people have exploited twelve in their cloths! Amazing. Historically, the Kuba people have used these cloths as wrappers, skirts, sleeping mats and even currency. We've named this print "Tukula,” the Bakuba word for the red pigment obtained from the heartwood of indigenous trees and traditionally applied to art and cloth created by the Kuba people.

About the Style:

Perfect Fit

Fit? You might ask why is the fit of a bib important...I'll tell you! ; ) Our little guy has lotsa sugar and wears a bib constantly. Some are made of rough, uncomfortable fabric that rubs under his chin and causes abrasions...others don't fit properly and they're either too tight or too lose...or they have this weird bubble that flubs up and is distracting for him. Thus, when we found the Ade + Ayo bibs fit PERFECTLY (He's been wearing them for about 6 months now), we bought every pattern...twice! The fabric is absorbent, soft and so colorful...the cut of the bib is just right, so it fits his neck comfortably and doesn't leave gaps for drool to escape ; ) but not so tight it's uncomfortable. To me, if the designer takes time with something this trivial, I feel their eye to detail on bigger items (e.g., clothing) has got to be on point...

Our products make it easy and comfortable to bring the beauty of African design into everyday play.

Our Story

Hi! I'm Temidayo, the mom behind Ade + Ayo. I created Ade + Ayo when I was pregnant with my son and I couldn't find children's products that would introduce him to African cultures while fitting into his everyday life. I wanted to change that so that my son, and all of our kids, can grow up with pride and respect for what Africa has to offer.

We use 100% organic cotton.

Safe for kids. Good for the environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ade + Ayo black-owned?

Yes, Ade + Ayo is owned by a Nigerian mom - so we’re proudly black- and woman-owned!

Is it cultural appropriation for my child to use Ade + Ayo products if we’re not African or of African descent?

Great question! I created Ade + Ayo to make beautiful African design more accessible to children. I hope to spark curiosity, love and respect for the people and cultures that inspire our products. From my perspective, it’s not cultural appropriation. When you receive your Ade + Ayo pieces, it’s important that your family interacts with these items from a place of celebration and respect for the cultures and people from whom they originate. You can read more about this on our main FAQ page!
